"You must be tired of living..."

Chapter 13

New York City

The Russian had been easy.

Steven hadn't known what to expect, but he had found it was less strenuous, if less satisfying, to just shoot someone as opposed to strangling them.

Now he sat in the lobby of the hotel where the Russian had been staying, casually killing time, reading the newspaper, waiting for his deed to be discovered.

And waiting for Rachel, who would be sure to turn up to investigate this one personally. This was too big, a possible international incident even though Russia seemed lately like a detoothed bear. The FBI would send its best, and that meant Rachel.

His heart beat a little faster just thinking of that moment when he came face to face with her, spoke to her.

He forced himself to wait patiently. There seemed to be a little disturbance behind the desk, some of the clerks had lost their sophisticated posture. Soon the police would be there, and not long after, Rachel herself.

He held the paper up, pretending to read, but peered over the top, watching.

*************

Jack missed his gun. It was just an old .38, the gun he had used while working as a detective and had bought from the city when he'd retired. Kat always made fun of it, telling him to get a newer model, to get with the times, maybe a nice nine millimeter like she had. But he liked his old one, he was used to it, and it had saved his life too many times to just get rid of it now.

His hip felt strange without it there. He naturally felt for it once in a while, and, just like the feeling a man gets when he checks his back pocket and his wallet isn't there, it panicked him a little that his gun wasn't there now.

While he could have attained a special permit to carry it with him, he hadn't bothered. Why should he? He had no good reason to, unless you counted Alice Beam, and he had told her off pretty good without resorting to lead to make his point.

And, of course, she had blamed it on the publicity people at his publisher. She had also pointed out that life could be worse, that an even worse fate would be for them to just put his book out there without any publicity at all

He checked his watch, which read 11:30. He was all packed, ready to go. Might as well head on out to the airport, he decided, and eat lunch there.

He grabbed his bags, one of which held his notebook computer in case he decided to write anything, and headed for the elevator. It took an unusually long time to arrive, and when he rode it to the lobby and started to get off, it looked like the place was on fire.

People were whispering and scurrying around, mostly hotel staff. He looked at them a moment, then went to the front desk to check out. Three clerks were in a huddle, whispering to each other and ignoring him.
